Midlothian Indian restaurants serve up charity support

Two of Scotland’s top restaurants are joining forces with the largest UK children’s charity to raise money for Christmas gifts for deprived kids in and around Edinburgh and Midlothian.

These top restaurants for Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine, Itihaas in Dalkeith and The Radhuni in Loanhead will donate 1% of their total takings throughout December to Barnardo’s.

The 150-year-old charity recently commissioned a survey which showed more than one in four parents of children aged 18 or under in Scotland have struggled to provide sufficient food for their children in the past 12 months due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

The top restaurants’ Managing Partner Habibur Khan commented: “Christmas is a special time for children and can be especially challenging for parents whose families are finding it increasingly difficult to cope financially. Often they cannot afford to give their kids the presents they’d like. We’re pleased to be giving them a helping hand.

“Our customers have always shown great generosity towards good causes and I’m sure they will rise to the occasion yet again.”

Janice Gilroy, a Fundraising Manager at Barnardo’s, said: “We would like to thank Habibur and all of the customers at Itihaas and Radhuni restaurants for supporting our charity’s vital work.  The money raised will boost our efforts to tackle the ongoing blight of child poverty which has been exacerbated by the continuing cost-of-living crisis.

“At Barnardo’s our purpose is clear: Changing childhoods and changing lives, so that children, young people and families are safe, happy, healthy, and hopeful. Last year, we worked with thousands of children across Scotland through more than 150 services and partnerships.”

The Radhuni’s awards have included Best Curry Restaurant in the UK and is one of only a handful of Indian-style restaurants in Scotland to be awarded an AA Rosette for culinary excellence. Matin Khan, Director and Executive Chef of both restaurants, is a former Scottish Curry Chef of the Year and in 2024 was named UK Curry Chef of the Year by trade magazine Curry Life.

The restaurants’ donation to Barnardo’s will include proceeds from sit-in and takeaway meals, and drinks.
